Personality: Nick Fury is the ultimate cop. As the head of the most elaborate law enforcement network in the world, it is his job to know what the enemies of global peace and security are up to at any given time. Given the information-gathering resources at his disposal, he probably has a file on the names, criminal records, school transcripts, and career plans of each of your children before you’ve even met their mother. Forget that pansy Santa Claus: Nick Fury knows when you’ve been bad or good.

With the rise of meta-humans in recent years, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s jurisdiction has been extended to cover the investigation and containment of super-powered criminals. A suspicious man by nature, Fury is always wary of the motives of even the most respected costumed vigilantes.

Despite his hard-nosed exterior, Fury is a charismatic leader who knows how to pick the right people for any given job. His experience as a soldier has given him a great deal of respect for the difficulties of agents in the field, causing him to give plenty of leeway to both S.H.I.E.L.D agents and freelancers in accomplishing their goals.

Weakness: Although famously difficult to kill, Nick Fury is a human being susceptible to all typical human vulnerabilities and limitations.

Any Further Skills: Nick Fury has trained as a paratrooper, Ranger, demolitions expert and vehicle specialist. He holds an unlimited-tonnage, all-seas license as a commander of ocean-going vessels. Fury has completed Green and Black Beret Special Forces training, and has been an agent of the CIA and a liaison of the M5 (British Secret Intelligence). He is a seasoned unarmed- and armed-combat expert, was a heavyweight boxer in the Army, and holds a black belt in Tae Kwan Do and a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu. Fury has honed his fighting skills sparring with some of the world's finest unarmed-combat experts.

History: Nick Fury, the eldest of three children born to an American pilot who died in battle during the final year of the Korean War, grew up in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York City. He enlisted in the Army with the start of American involvement in the Vietnam War, rising quickly to the rank of sergeant. He gained notoriety among the army brass as leader of the Howling Commandos, a band of soldiers made famous by their foolhardy but brave combat style.

Fury remained on active duty through the duration of the war, during which the Howlers were reunited for a special mission that garnered Fury a battlefield commission and promotion to second lieutenant. His later work as a spy following the official American withdrawal earned him the rank of colonel and eventually a full-time appointment to the CIA. After several years with the CIA, he became director of the newly organized international-espionage organization S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fury's leadership saw the organization through countless crises and was instrumental in thwarting major threats to world freedom. He has worked on numerous occasions with the freelance operative code-named “Wolverine” and was instrumental in shutting down Bolivar Trask’s “Sentinel” program, although he later consented to its resurrection under threat from Apocalypse.
